Blink 182 History

Blink-182 began back in 1992 after Tom DeLonge was expelled from Poway High School and, in true rebel fashion, this grungy punk from Cali retaliated by forming a band with new friend Mark Hoppus- whom he met during his residence at Rancho Bernardo High School. The two teens jammed out in Tom’s garage, annoyed their parents to no end, and created a union the world would come to love. Soon after, buddy and drummer Scott Raynor was added to the mix under the initial name Duck Tape- finally agreeing on Blink.

With the band practicing 24/7, Mark’s main lady was angered by the lack of attention- so she gave him an ultimatum, me or blink. To everyone’s surprise Mark chose his girlfriend, a possible inspiration for “Whats My Age Again?” But the boys had a plan to snag him back in- Tom showed Mark his 4-track and, needless to say, the future Mrs. Hoppus was no more.

Blink 182’s first demo tape, Flyswatter, was recorded in 1993 in Scott’s bedroom on that fateful 4-track – which, unlike the digital stuff available today, renders poor recording quality. Because of this, Blink only released a few copies to friends and family; upping their game in late 1993, Blink recorded their second demo, aptly named Demo 2.Some of the tracks on this EP can be seen on Buddha, Cheshire Cat and Dude Ranch.

Filter records snagged Blink up for their 1993 LP Buddha, releasing only 1,000 copies, Buddha was re-released in 1998 re-mastered and refined -the album was recorded on a 24-track, much more forgiving than the 4 track. Cheshire Cat, released in 1994 under Cargo Music, would be thier first studio LP, with version of “Carousel,” “Sometimes,” “T.V” and “Strings” off the Buddha demo. When Blink started to touch upon the radio circuit and Blink 182 concerts were gaining attention, an Irish pop band of the same name threatened a lawsuit, so Blink added “182″ to the end of their name and all was kush. Later on that year, Blink 182 would go on to released a split EP with Iconoclasts called Short Bus some tracks off the album can be found on Cheshire Cat. More productive than ever, Blink 182 would released the 3-track EP They Came to Conque…Uranus, in 1995, “Waggy” can be found on Dude Ranch.

After packing up their stuff and moving to Encinitas in 1996, Blink 182 recorded Dude Ranch thier first LP to chart. Initially distributed under Cargo Records, Dude Ranch had to be transferred over to MCA to handle the volume of record sales. “Dammit,” would be their first hit single- nostalgic for most, this song brought pop punk into the mainstream along with bands like New Found Glory and AFI.

It was during the Blink 182 tour of 1998 that problems arose with Scott- according to popular rumors, Scott had a drinking problem and was asked to leave the band, others say that Scott left in order to attend college. Scott was placed by Travis Barker, who was supporting The Aquabats at the time.

Further increasing Blink 182’s popularity- Enema of the State, make Blink 182 the spokespeople for pop punk. Tracks like “What’s My Age Again?” “All The Small Things” and “Adams” song topped US modern charts instantly. They became so popular that they appeared in the cult-favorite “American Pie”

The Mark, Tom and Travis Show, a live album, was released in 2000. With only a million copies in print during it’s initial released, the CD was more valuable than Blink 182 tickets are now! With twenty music tracks and tons of vocal tracks, the CD is dotted with uncensored stuff and ha-has- good for a long drive.

Take off your pants and Jacket was released in 2001, with special editions in yellow, red and green CD colors each with different bonus tracks. The next year, Blink 182 tickets went on sale for their Pop Disaster Tour with Green Day- it was then that Travis and Tom released a record under the name “Box Car Racer.”

2003 saw the release of the eponymous 5th studio album Blink 182 with singles “I Miss You,” “Down,” “Always” and “Feeling This”- a marked change for that band, the album featured less comedy and more melody- serious overtones and darker sound. The Dollabill Blink 182 tour followed along with a short stint with No Doubt.

Tensions mounted in 2005 when Tom expressed desire to take a break before the Blink 182 spring tour and Mark felt excluded from Box Car Racer (according to some sources). After several unexplained tour cancellations- Blink’s band manager called Mark and Travis to tell them that Tom had quit the band.

Blink 182 found respective success in their own personal project s- Tom’s band Angels and Airwaves released two studio albums, all reaching top ten on US charts. Mark and Travis’ band +44 released a top ten album in 2006 and Travis did a circuit with DJ AM under the name TRAVI$. The break wouldn’t be dotted without tragedy- Travis was critically injured in a plane crash in 2008, two of his staff died in the crash but Travis made a full recovery.

Whether it was Travis’ tragedy or the desire to make good music again, whatever the reason, we’re glad that Blink 182 is back. With rumors of a reunion circulating around blogs in 2008, confirmation came in the form of a short announcement at the Grammys in 2009.

Well it seems like the boys are amped and positive, which is a plus. After Travis recovers Blink 182 tickets will go on sale, so check out the Blink 182 ticketing page for more information.
